The Coalition for the Homeless reports over half a million people were homeless on a single night in 2018, with 17 percent of New Yorkers accounting for the country’s overall homeless population. Homelessness across New York state has increased by 40 percent since 2010 that also impacts youth homelessness.

Current Initiative

Work with the Homeless Alliance of WNY, and other community agencies and organizations, on the Youth Task Force — and the System Advocacy and Partnership Work Group — to develop a community plan required by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to utilize project funding for the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) in effort to reduce the number of youth in Erie and Niagara counties experiencing homelessness. The Erie/Niagara YHDP Coordinated Community Plan has prioritized three types of projects: joint transitional rapid rehousing, a family engagement team, and overnight drop-in centers.

The Homeless Alliance of WNY, one of 23 local communities, received a $3.5 million grant through HUD in 2019.
